The UBS Future of Finance Challenge

Collaborating with the next generation of startups and entrepreneurs

UBS has launched an open competition for entrepreneurs and technology startups around the world, aiming to find innovative and potentially disruptive technological ideas and solutions that will support the transformation of the banking industry, writes John Burbedge

UBS also aims to support the competition winners in their bid to commercialise and scale their ideas and technologies, by leveraging on its significant global presence, deep expertise in global banking and eco-system of innovation partners.

Rewards for the regional and global finalists include cash prizes and acceleration opportunities worth over $300,000 and over 300 hours of dedicated coaching and mentoring from UBS experts and partners.

’Digital disruption is driving an unprecedented transformation of our industry and radical new technologies present a unique opportunity for a step-change to our client offerings’

With the financial industry facing disruption and rapid technology change, the UBS open competition is searching for solutions to four specific challenges for banks going forward:

• delivering the ultimate client experience • offering superior products • building an efficient operating model • ensuring security in banking.

By inviting entrepreneurs and startups to present their ideas, UBS is also supporting a more open and collaborative financial services industry.

Introducing the UBS Future of Finance Challenge, Oliver Bussmann, UBS group chief information officer, commented: ”Digital disruption is driving an unprecedented transformation of our industry and radical new technologies present a unique opportunity for a step-change to our client offerings.

”Fostering an open and collaborative ecosystem between banks, technology firms and start-ups is critical to drive new innovation forward. I am very excited to be supporting the participants in this competition.”

The new competition initiative, launched in August, will be particularly welcomed in the Solent and Thames Valley areas, explained local UBS client adviser Toby Johnson. ”This region is full of vibrant, aspirational companies, many of them fairly

young or seeking to grow, both of which scenarios usually requires professional funding or financial services of some sort to achieve their business objectives.

”As we have discovered in our recent series of The Business Magazine features, jointly supported by EY, which have highlighted Southern Entrepreneurs, this region is also well- blessed with entrepreneurial innovators.

”Accordingly, I encourage them to take part in this open competition since their involvement has the potential to create a win-win situation for all concerned.

”Not only might their creative minds bring forward constructive proposals that could help resolve financial issues which have held back the progress of their own company or business sector, but initiatives that might also unlock a host of UK businesses from the banking structures and strictures that can delay or even prevent the natural commercial evolution of progressive businesses within ’UK plc’ in general. Either way, surely that can only be good news for the national economy.

”Not forgetting, of course that winning entrants will have their own future prospects boosted by cash and professional coaching rewards.”

The UBS Future of Finance Challenge will be delivered in collaboration with several of the leading Fintech crowd-working and accelerator spaces including Level39, NUS Enterprise @Blk71 and JFDI Asia, as well as the innovation agency, 100%Open.

Commercial and technical expertise will also be available for the innovators participating in the competition, along with access to the innovation pipeline of a leading global financial services firm at the same time.

Globally, participants will be divided into four regions: Asia- Pacific (including Japan and Australia), EMEA (Africa & Western Europe), EMEA (Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Russia), and the Americas.

A maximum of 15 participants per region will be shortlisted to attend Immersion Workshops in either Singapore (November 2 and 3), London (November 5 and 6), New York (November 9 and10) or Zurich (November 12 and 13).

Three winners from each region will be selected to do a personal ’pitch’ supporting their entry at the Global Final to be held in Zurich on December 10.
