Program Set for ASHRAE 2015 Energy Modeling Conference: LowDown Showdown Announced

ASHRAE has announced the technical program for its “Energy Modeling Conference: Tools for Designing High Performance Buildings,” Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, 2015, in Atlanta, GA, at the At- lanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel and Conference Center. The Conference focuses on the practical application of high performance building model- ing. In addition to the three-day Technical Program, the confer- ence includes software dem- onstrations by leading vendors, networking opportunities and the new ASHRAE “LowDown Showdown,” an interactive mod- eling challenge for conference attendees.

“What makes this conference unique from the previous Energy Modeling Conferences and other industry events is that we will be engaging the vendors and the Conference participants in the practical application of modeling tools,” Dennis Knight, confer- ence chair, said. “Between the very strong line-up of speakers and the ASHRAE LowDown Showdown challenge, confer- ence goers will come away with hands-on information that can be taken back and implemented in

New ASHRAE Standard

Provides Method of Test on Determining Gain of Office Equipment

The growing use of plug loads in buildings as well as insuffi cient data on how much energy they generate present a challenge to engineers in determining how to best cool a building.

Guidance to meet that chal- lenge is contained in a new stan- dard from ASHRAE. ASHRAE/ ANSI Standard 203-2014, Meth- od of Test for Determining Heat Gain of Offi ce Equipment Used in Buildings, prescribes methods of test to determine the range and average operating heat gains of electrical equipment for use in cooling load calculations. The standard applies to plug-load type electrical equipment. Plug loads (computers, moni- tors, printers, projectors, etc.) are estimated to use between 20 to 50 percent of building energy use. They have evolved to be- come a larger percentage of a building’s overall heat. Two factors are responsible for that increase, according to Glenn Friedman, chair of the Standard 203 committee. “First, over time, computer use has continued to increase, resulting in a much larger num- ber of personal computers in buildings,” he said. “Second, advances in building techniques Continued on page 15

the workplace.”

The conference sessions are organized into two tracks: 1) Modeling Tips and Tricks: Modeling Techniques; Modeling Workfl ow; Daylighting; Paramet- ric Modeling for Design; Code Compliance; and Optimization. 2) Modeling Best Practices: Conceptual Design; Business Cases for BIM and BEM; Incen- tive Programs; New Tools and Techniques; Thermal Comfort; HVAC Systems Modeling; Cali- bration, Measurement and Vali- dation; and Weather.

New to the conference this year is the ASHRAE LowDown Showdown modeling challenge.

The ASHRAE LowDown Show- down showcases the work of several teams competing to model a net zero or below build- ing. The purpose is to give confer- ence attendees the opportunity to work with the vendor/developer of their choice to showcase their abilities using the vendor’s simu- lation tools, innovative workfl ows and creative problem solving to model a high performance build- ing while having fun. Participants are required to sign up by Mon- day, June 1, and to register for the conference. To sign up for the ASHRAE LowDown Showdown, visit https://www.research.net/s/ ASHRAELowDownShowdown.

Prior to the start of the con- ference, on Tuesday, Sept. 29, ASHRAE will present a six-hour course titled, “Energy Modeling Best Practices and Applications.” See www.ashrae.org/modeling- course for more information. In addition, six pre-Conference workshops will be presented by software companies Monday, Sept. 28, and Tuesday, Sept. 29. Visit www.ashrae.org/EMC2015 for the complete list. Post conference, ASHRAE

will offer a Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP) certification exam, as well as certifi cation exams for Building Energy Assessment Profes-

sional (BEAP), Commissioning Process Management Profes- sional (CPMP), Healthcare Facil- ity Design Professional (HFDP), High-Performance Building De- sign Professional (HBDP) and Operations & Performance Man- agement Professional (OPMP). The certifi cation exam session will take place Friday, Oct. 2, 1 p.m.–4 p.m. Apply by Sept. 10 at www.ashrae.org/emcexams to sit for the ASHRAE certifi cation exams.
