Angola Prison Rodeo - More than 50 Years

Louisiana State Peniten- tiary was built at the corner of 6th and Laurel Streets in Baton Rouge. After the Civil War, the penitentiary lease was awarded to a former Confederate Major by the name of Samuel James. The James Family would be in charge of the Louisiana Corrections sys- tem for the next 31 years. In 1880, Major James purchased an 8,000-acre plantation in West Felici- ana Parish called Angola (named after the area in Africa where the former slaves came from). He began keeping some in- mates there at what used to be the Old Slave Quar- ters, which later became Camp A. On January 1, 1901, the State of Louisi- ana resumed control of all inmates after 55 years of the lease system.

The State of Louisi- ana purchased the 8,000 acre Angola Plantation at $25.00 per acre, a total cost of $200,000. Fast forward to modern day and Angola’s current Warden, Burl Cain, is the longest serving warden in the his- tory of Angola. The Angola Rodeo, the longest running prison rodeo in the nation, got its start in 1965. The first arena was small, built by a handful of dedicated inmates and personnel. It wasn’t much in those days, and the rodeo was staged just for the entertainment of prisoners and employ- ees. It was reputed to be great fun. Today, the Angola Prison Rodeo is a professionally produced rodeo. Angola contracts with professional rodeo stock contractors to provide the rodeo stock used in events; profes- sional judges are con- tracted to objectively judge each event. In addition, to ensure inmate participant safety, professional rodeo clowns are always present in the arena during events. A full complement of emer- gency services personnel are on-site to provide med-

ical assistance to inmates and spectators. Ticket, concession, and hobbycraft sales in the late 90’s broke all records, prompting the administra- tion to build another arena. Construction began on the new stadium in April 2000 and increased capacity to 7,500. The new stadium was completed for the first rodeo in 2000.

What began 50 years ago as a “fun” thing by a handful of rodeo-loving inmates and employees is now a big business. Proceeds from the Angola Prison Rodeo cover rodeo expenses and supplement the Louisiana State Peni- tentiary Inmate Welfare

These state-of-the-art sys- tems deliver precise and efficient comfort by run- ning their compressors at the same exact speed needed to keep homes at the ideal temperature, no matter what the conditions. Featuring a ComfortLink II Communicating Con- trol Board with refrigerant cooled inverter, it consis- tently optimizes its run speed, often at lower out- puts, to provide continuous comfort within a half degree of the targeted tempera- ture and at sound levels 4db quieter than Trane’s nearest competitor. This eliminates uncomfortable temperature swings and provides energy-efficient, quiet operation.

The secret to good tem- perature and humidity con- trol is long run cycles. Tru- Comfort™ systems have the widest operating range of any system on the market. This means Trane can slow down rather than cycle off like conventional systems or even 2-stage systems. Being able to run at slower speeds than the competi- tion is a great advantage for Trane dealers. A Trane TruComfort™ system will still be cooling when Carrier and Lennox systems have cycled off. Running longer also reduces wear and tear of frequent starting and stopping.

Competitors advertise that their system’s abil- ity to provide such good temperature control is due

to their ability to adjust the compressor speed in 1% increments. Trane TruComfort™ Technology allows the speed of the compressor to be varied increments as small as 1/10th of 1%. That’s ten times the precision of any competitor! Every few sec- onds the XL950 control sends a capacity demand request to the outdoor unit and the outdoor integrated control calculates a com- pressor speed to deliver the requested capacity…. such 25.4…42.2…to 56.8. These Trane systems are that precise, they don’t even make speed changes in full 1% increments. Variable speed technol- ogy is not new for Trane. The Trane brand was the 1st HVAC manufacturer to apply variable speed tech- nology to residential cool- ing in the early 1990’s. Now in its 101st year, Trane has perfected the technology with the TruComfort XV20i and XV18i air conditioners and heat pumps. And be- cause TruComfort variable speed technology works seamlessly with Trane’s ComfortLink II Control and Nexia Home Intelligence smart home system, ho- meowners can manage their home’s heating and cooling remotely via any Web-enabled smartphone, tablet or computer.
