have improved envelopes and reduce that portion of load/energy use.”

Engineers optimize HVAC equipment selections by perform- ing cooling load calculations. In- ternal heat gains from plug loads are a signifi cant portion of those calculations.

“Most plug loads operate at a fraction of their nameplate electrical load, so, as a result, produce signifi cantly less heat load than engineers may use in their cooling load calculations based on those nameplate values,” he said. “This can result in oversizing of air-conditioning equipment, resulting in extra initial cost for that equipment as well as higher operating cost.”

Friedman noted that engi- neers face several challenges when it comes to determining heat gain of equipment. Since there are no standards for es- tablishing how the power con- sumption or heat rejection data or various plug loads is determined, it is diffi cult for engineers to accu- rately use this data in their cooling load calculations. ASHRAE has funded research to develop a test method and measure plug load type equipment heat rejection. In addition, plug load type equip- ment is an ever evolving market, so equipment design changes frequently and requires new test- ing for power consumption and generation of heat rejection data for cooling load calculation use. The cost of Standard 203- 2014, Method of Test for De- termining Heat Gain of Office Equipment Used in Buildings, is $41 ($35 member). Later branch managers were invited to request that individual vendors come to their stores and present their products at coun- ter days. This would allow the vendor's products to be shown to local branch customers. This also helps reinforce the Summer Sales Classic effort to increase vendor product sales during the Summer Sales Classic. Of course an added advantage is the fl ow of educational informa- tion directly from the vendor representatives to the branch customer who are purchasing the product. 
