gardening Get in the Garden GARDENING DIARY FOR AUGUST & SEPTEMBER A
ugust is the month when the garden and allotment are in full production. Flowers to enjoy with their colour and scent and lots of home -grown produce
to grace your table. Watering is a very important task this month to prolong the life of everything that is growing a pace. In September, the pace of the garden slows a little and there is time to take stock for next year, perhaps adding in a few more bulbs and making plans for a few more additions to your planting, ready for an even better display next year.
In the flower garden ✿ Keep watering pots and hanging baskets ✿ Dead head flowering plants on a regular basis
✿ Later in the month collect seed from any perennials and hardy annuals you wish to propagate.
✿ Extend the flowering season in your garden by planting late flowering plants like sedums and michaelmas daisies
✿ Choose your spring flowering bulbs for planting out in the autumn
✿ Divide herbaceous perennials
✿ Plant up pots for spring with a mixture of wallflowers and bulbs
✿ Buy lily bulbs as soon as they are available and plant up

✿ Continue to sow lettuce, salad leaves, beets and spinach
✿ Harvest vegetables including sweet corn as they become ready
✿ Spray runner beans with water to aid pollination
✿ To prevent onions and shallots running to seed and depleting energy from the bulb, bend the tops over
✿ Dig over ground that was occupied by early potatoes and incorporate compost or manure
✿ Plant new fruit trees, especially peach and nectarine, as the soil will still be warm
✿ Continue to cut out old fruited raspberry canes
✿ Towards the beginning of autumn bring in any outdoor trusses of tomatoes to ripen and make any remaining ones into green tomato chutney
