a picnic in the peaceful grounds under the shelter of ancient trees. the castle is a very short walking distance from the High street, with too many fabulous cafés and restaurants to mention for post castle refreshments. Don’t miss the ‘graffiti’ on the trees left by prisoners of war during the second World War and the gift shop on your way out.

slapton Ley’s free beach trailer events are back again this summer. the trailer is parked at the memorial Car park at slapton sands, everyday of the school summer holidays, from 11am to 4pm.
staff are enthusiastic and brimming with local knowledge on the history and geography of the area. Free events include touchy feely boxes; kite making; tower challenge; recycled mosaic art; scavenger hunts; and orienteering All children are invited to attend but must be accompanied by an adult.
10 Haldon Forest Park
the forest park at Haldon Hill covers 3,500 acres of woodland, just minutes from exeter. Walks and bike trails are coded for ability, including the family friendly Discovery trail complete with natural play features and the more challenging butterfly trail, with the potential to discover some rare butterflies in the peaceful depths of the forest. there’s a technical trail for more experienced mountain bikers and a cycle skills area for practice. Haldon also houses a go Ape adventure zone, complete with zip wires and tarzan swings and ten miles of horse riding trails. You can even take a segway trail and tour the forest

11 Pennywell Farm
pennywell Farm is a delightful place for young children to meet and handle farm animals in a safe and relaxed environment. there’s a different activity, show or display every half hour. staff are always friendly and lively and add to the unique feel of the place.
Numerous activities include egg collecting; goat and lamb bottle-feeding; pond dipping; ferret and miniature pig racing; pony pampering; and deer feeding. there are also entertainers during school holidays and special events held throughout the year. For more information visit their website at www.

12 Stover Country Park
stover park, on the outskirts of Newton Abbot, contains more than 114 acres of woodland, lake, heath and grassland. Interpretation boards, an aerial walkway and bird hide all add to the chances of seeing and identifying the huge variety of wildlife there. An information centre with visitor centre, classroom and rangers’ office is located near the entrance. easy car parking and picnic areas make this a great day out. the ted Hughes poetry trail, with 16 specially designed ‘poetry posts’ celebrate the great poet and his long-standing links with the natural world of Devon. there’s also a shorter children’s poetry trail, which lets families share some of Hughes’ most memorable poems illustrated by raymond briggs.
