Santa Rosa, CA. ~ It’s that time of year again to take some time off and enjoy the great outdoors for some much need- ed R & R. I looked back over some older photos and was try- ing to think, ‘What reminds me of Summer?’

Cherries do! I remember pick- ing cherries for hours in 100 de- gree weather out in Sebastopol, Califonia. My end goal was to sell them. I want- ed to be like my parents and run my own business. I had told my mom about what I wanted to do and she told me to get the card table and then to make a sign that I could put up. I did. It read: FRESH ROYAL ANNE CHERRIES- 3 LBs for $1.00. Not fi ve minutes after putting out the sign, table set up and a small scale with small lunch bags, I was in business. I sold them all. I gave the money to my mom, and I wasn’t sure what she used it for, but prob- ably to buy food for the family. But, I wanted to earn money for myself. At Christams time my borthers always got a bonus every year for their Christmas tree farm work, and me & my little brother Chris did not. I also wasn’t sure why that was because I always worked very

hard helping to cut down trees, lugging them back to the cus- tomers cars and helping them tie it down in addtion to getting the farm ready for the holiday season. I have to admit, since I knew I wouldn’t get the ‘Bo-

bum box, I found well over 10 different cards from businesses I had attempted to start. I learned from everyone of those too. I can say, I never did make much money at any of them, except for professional

can dream. My life, my sched- ule and it’s lots of fun! And to think, my inspiration started from selling cherries. I hope to have a Christmas tree farm someday again like my parents & grandparents did. But, right now I am running the Upbeat Times, soon to become Upbeat Times, INC, so my time is limited for other projects. There are

things, all posi- tive happening that just might help to make this dream a re- ality, but I will save it for fur- ther editions of the Upbeat Times! For those of you who camp,

nus’, I often waited around, practically begging for a tip. My mom heard about it and promptly let me know it wasn’t ok. I did manage to almost make fi ve dollars in one day one time! I liked tips! Truth- fully, I wanted money so I could buy my grandma & grandpa as well as my mom and my dad a Christmas gift every year. They always got me something, so I wanted to return the kindness. It was truly my goal to have

my own business one day that I created. Recently, while look- ing back at some of my earlier attemps at business in my al-

cartooning on ad campaigns for newspapers and teaching at SRJC summer classes for kids. Another truth was, and still is, if I can’t have fun at what I do for a living, I won’t do it. The best part is, I’m fi nally running a business that allows me great freedom. It is truly the Ameri-

or just stay put or even go on vacations, it is my wish that you have a great upbeat time! Besides, that’s what we earn money for too!

May this issue fi nd you well!

A frog is outgrowing his lily pad and decides to make some home improvements. He doesn’t have the money, so he hops to the bank to borrow some. At the bank, he takes a seat at loan offi cer Patricia Black’s desk and explains his dilemma.

“I want to upgrade my lily pad, maybe add another window, but I don’t have the cash. Can you lend me the money?”

“Maybe. What can you offer as collateral?”

“Well,” says the frog. “All I have is this paperweight. You shake it up, and it snows on the little village. Cute, huh?”

“Hmm . . . I’ll have to speak to my manager.” She enters her manager’s offi ce.

“Mr. Bitterby, I’ve got a frog at my desk who wants to borrow money for lily pad improve- ments. But all he can offer for collateral is this glass paperweight.”

Mr. Bitterby takes the paper- weight, hefts it in his hand, looks at her and says, “It’s a knick-knack, Patty Black, give the frog a loan.”
