SANTA ROSA, CA. ~ The Proctor Terrace Elementary meeting room was full of ex- citement
when we cel- ebrated the awarding of five Strik- ing Sparks telescopes to deserving students that had entered
the 2015 essay contest. This is the 30th year of the STRIKING SPARKS program where 261 telescopes have been awarded to Sonoma County, California students.
The winners were accompa- nied by some very supportive teachers that par- ents that shared the festivities. A cake with astro- nomical decora- tion was served by June Fergu- son for the group before the tele- scope winners were announced. We also pleased that our long time sponsor Mark Hejtmanek form Colo- rado and Paul Doyle, Publisher of the Upbeat Times were also present.
Larry McCune provided a little history of how the pro- gram began in Bob Ferguson’s basement workshop where tele- scopes were fabricated to award to stu- dents as a way to stimulate an interest in sci- ence and as-
