Weight advice for joint ops
LOCAL doctors are supporting na- tional guidance that patients for joint replacements (such as hip and knee) should be advised to have a body mass index (BMI) of less than 30 before they are referred for treat- ment. The local CCG says: “This is ad-
vice rather than an eligibility crite- ria and there would likely be exceptions.” It needs to ensure the long-term functional benefits and reduce the risk of complications. The CCG wants a review of clini-
cal evidence and audit outcomes for patients with a BMI of 40 or above to produce guidance for these pa- tients, taking benefits versus risks and value for money into account. TheCCGsays obesity needs to be addressed to assist the wider system for prevention.

Seven-day plan rejected
MAIDSTONEand otherWest Kent GPs made a bid for the Prime Min- ister’s challenge fund to pilot sur- geries opening seven days aweek – but it was rejected by NHS Eng- land. The GP-led West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), chaired by Bob Bowes (pictured) says it is not opposed to seven-day working. Its Clinical Strategy Group (CSG) discussed a paper to divert CCG commissioning funds to open
surgeries for a six-month pilot to see if it had an impact on A&E atten- dances.
But members
did not give sup- port because they want to await re- sults of national pi- lots; resources are not yet available for a pilot; and the
required GP workforce is not avail- able and this could affect weekday
Supper to pay for oven
THElatest Bill’s Safari Supper saw 32 people take part, including three joining in for the first time. The event raised £310, which will go towards a
new oven at HarrietshamVillage Hall. After supper, the finale was hosted by Jan and
Mike Kingsman, when the sum raised was boosted by a lively selection of games. The next Bill’s Safari Supper will be held in No-
vember, with the date to be announced later in the summer. Anyone who enjoys informal and friendly get-togethers, meeting new people in the village or cementing friendships should contact Roger Bevan on 01622 859310 or email

services. Government policy is to have a
seven-day GP service by 2020 – but the CSG feels logistical issues of re- sources and workforce need to be addressed first. CCG members do not think the
policy represents value for money and would not have a significant im- pact on hospitalA&E pressures. It agreed “quality and capacity of
GP provision” have more of an im- pact on A&E.
50mph plan for A249
THEA249 Groupwas set to meet at the end of July to discuss the possibility of a 50mph speed limit on the dual carriageway. The informal group – a consortium of Stockbury, Thurnham and Detling parish councils – was hoping the police would attend to debate the suggestion. The meeting follows another serious accident on the
dual carriageway, close to Jade’s Crossing, in which a motorist had to be airlifted to hospital. Other issues likely to be discussed include the road surface and access to the White Horse Wood country park at the top of Detling Hill.
