News Tony’s blooming at 85
WHEN lifelong gardener Tony Smith celebrated a milestone birthday, friends and family thought his gardening chums should get a slice of the cake. So more than 30 members of The
Street Allotments group in Bearsted gathered at the White Horse to cel- ebrate Tony’s 85th birthday. Tony, of Fremlins Drive, has held
an allotment at The Street since 1972 andwas instrumental in form- ing The Street Allotments Commit- tee, of which he is a member. A retired Royal Marine, Tony
joined up in 1947, shortly after the end of WorldWar II. He trained at
Bickley in Devon andwas based in Malta and Cyprus. He left the Marines as a warrant officer and worked in the financial
sector until he retired in 1993. A widower, having lost his wife
Audrey several years ago, Tony has two daughters Judy, who lives in Essex, and Janice who lives in Canada. Together, they organised the party at the White Horse and were there to help him celebrate. Allotment holder Malcolm Terry
said: “Tony is the longest-serving allotment holder at The Street and he is very knowledgeable about gardening. Everyone knows him as they all turn to him for advice and answers! We were delighted to be invited to share his special day with his family.”
Pink ladies get stuck in for cancer charity
THEY may be pretty in pink but they won’t stay that way for long – this team of fundraisers is planning to take part in the Pretty Muddy Maidstone Race for Life. The team, from BMI Somerfield
Hospital in the town, will be among the thousands taking part in the 5k race on Sunday, July 11 to raise money for Cancer Relief UK. The event runs from 11am to
2pm. It is organised by Pretty Muddy and Join In, an Olympic and
Paralympic legacy charity. The event aims to encourage peo-
ple to run similar events and raise awareness of volunteering.

Twinning call for help
MAIDSTONE’s twinning group is looking for more members to help promote the entente cordiale with a French town. The Maidstone/Beauvais Twin-
ningAssociation began in 1961.Over the years, the links between the two places have gone from strength to strength, but with the Beauvais group still thriving, membership on this side of the Channel dwindled after Maidstone Council withdrew its funding a few years ago. Borough Cllr Wendy Hinder, twinning committee vice-chairman, said: “Due to the withdrawal of fundingwe have seen our member- ship drop significantly. We are ur- gently trying to re-invent ourselves to increase the membership in order to be able to hold fundraising events. We would welcome new members whohave aninterest in France, those who have expertise or experience in fundraising, and anyone who just wishes to join to be able to partici- pate in social events.” The committee held its annual meeting at Maidstone Town Hall this month. Anyone interested in joining the twinning association can contact the secretary, Michael Yates on
myates38@btinternet.com or 079636 677952.
