COUNCILLORS are to write to Maidstone Council to seek clarifica- tion about the re-development of the old school on Thurnham Lane.

the society’s heritage work, which includes cre- ating a set of village stocks.

Thurnham is thought

to be the only parish council to have established an annual award to recog- nise contributions to Kent’s heritage. The award – in memory of Lord Sandy Bruce-Lockhart, the late leader of

KCC and chairman of English Heritage – ismade fromwood salvaged from the surroundings of Thurnham Castle. The parish council is now looking for heritage projects for this year’s

award. Nominations should be sent to thurnhamparishcouncil@sher- riebabington.co.uk by April 30, 2016.

Concerns over policing cuts

CONCERNSwere expressed about the effect of budget cuts on local policing. Cllr Ted Denham said with £61m

in savings to be made by 2019, even more officers were set to leave the force, in addition to the 500 who had already gone. He said: “When the likes of

David Cameron get five of six offi- cers to protect them and our parish has one PCSO, who works shifts, with more set to go, this seems en- tirely unfair. “We are seeing less resources and

the police being able to do less and less and this problem is only going to grow.”

THE parish council has been joined by Neil Baigent. His co-option follows the re-elec-

tion of chairman Daniel Skinner and the co-option of Ian Shelley, who joined the parish council last year. Cllr Baigent (38), who was edu-

cated at Maidstone Grammar School and has lived inWare Street for 15 years, completes the coun- cil’s full line-up. He currently works as a senior procurement manager for the NHS.

Just a minute OLD minutes kept by the clerks of Thurnham Parish Council through the years need a permanent home. The clerk has been asked to ap- proach the county council’s archive service to see if the leather- bound and, later, typed copies of the minutes might be safeguarded. Cllr Peter Waite said: “I think it

would be good if they could be kept somewhere where a scholar can actually go to read them.”

Mayor’s party COUNCILLOR John Horne has agreed to represent Thurnham Parish Council at the forthcoming mayor of Maidstone’s garden party.
