Summer GUIDE #1

A Metaphor For My Mind By Jean Wong ~ lijeanwong.blogspot.com

Sonoma County, CA. ~ I’ve practiced meditation for the last thirty years and have tried to shed my tendency to fret and worry. So why am I still who I am? Why do I have to carry my fif- ty pound sack of possible dire eventuali- ties wherever I go? Not more

than fifty pounds, because they charge you extra after that— I mean the airlines and my flights in the nowadays not so friendly skies. Okay, everyone packs an

iPod, iPad, camera, cell phone, phone charger. And it’s not un- reasonable to bring a little med- ical dispensary—allergy pills (both holistic and prescription), Ibuprofen, Tylenol, Tums, Gas X, sleeping pills (three kinds), muscle relaxants,

ulcer pills,

cough drops, cough medicine, Ben Gay, vitamin pills, eye drops, and the usual necessi- ties such as electric toothbrush, mouth guard, dental floss, shampoo, sun tan lotion, condi- tioner, body lotion, cold cream,

eye glass cleaner, and an as- sortment of

cosmetics. Have

to remember the alarm clock, extension cord, extra pair of eye glasses, laundry bag, and scotch tape (to post little reminder notes on the bathroom mirror).

I’m pretty good about packing light when it comes to clothes.

I’ll wear each outfit at least two times and perhaps bring a swim suit, some jewelry, maybe bath- room slippers and an extra pair of shoes. I veer towards over- doing it when I think of necessi- ties such as a heating pad, mos- quito repellent, and my cane that turns into a stool if I am go- ing on long museum tours. And what if I have some spare time? Surely it might come in handy to have my books, magazines, watercolors, embroidery, pen- cil sharpener, and poems and essay collection to edit. Also I need to remember toys for the grandchildren I’m visiting— play dough, picture books, art projects, toy cars, yoyos, play- ing cards, stickers.

Camps, Conferences & Retreats (UCCR) caters the event, oper- ates the park campground, and is a part of Team Sugarloaf. Guests are welcome to bring their own snacks, beverages, or an entire picnic. Organizers suggest bring- ing a blanket or similar ground cover, since there are no picnic tables in the amphitheater area for people planning to share a picnic with family and friends. There are wood benches in the amphitheater, or visitors may bring chairs or a blanket for lawn seating. Team Sugarloaf is made up of

five local, park-supporting, non- profit

organizations that have

worked together to create a plan to keep Sugarloaf Ridge State Park open to the public, and the group needs the public’s ongoing sup- port.

FUNKY FRIDAYS However, my real downfall

is the question of food—espe- cially if I am visiting a foreign country. I’ve just got to pack my organic apples, mangoes, nuts, favorite potato chips, cheese,

beef jerky, prunes,

non- perishable tofu, ramen, canned clams, can opener, hot pot, electric adapter, wine, wine bottle opener, flax seed oil, salt, Dijon mustard, both regular and instant cereal, in- stant macaroni and cheese, as- sortment of silverware includ- ing serrated knife, paper plates, bowls, cups, saran wrap, tinfoil, and baggies. Deep down in my heart, I think I have a basic fear that other countries don’t have food. My family makes fun of me, but they didn’t think I was such a buffoon when we once landed in Scotland late at night, starving, and I whipped out a nice hot spaghetti dinner. Still it is a little embarrassing when it takes me weeks to pack while my husband just spends one hour on the day of our flight. Packing for a trip seems to be a metaphor for my mind—an always prepared, situation-con- trolling, non go-with-the-flow person—a fatal flaw when you are trying to Be Here Now.
