The emergence of renewable skills


Back in the late 1960’s, East Anglia and in particular Bacton, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft became part of the emerging UK oil & gas industry. Oil companies such as Shell, Amoco and Phillips established their bases in the area and quite quickly local and national businesses started to create an important supply chain to support the activities.


Many of the skill sets required for the emerging offshore engineering and construction sector came from the local East Anglian shipbuilding, electrical and


mechanical industries supplemented by labour from the South and North of England and Scotland.


Over the years these skills for the UK oil & gas sector have become some of the best in class and many of the individuals who came


to work in East Anglia from other parts of the country settled here and have built long term careers with some of the major companies in the area.


WIND ENERGY SECTOR


The 1990’s then saw the emergence of the renewable energy industry and this was when IRS Recruitment first became involved in recruiting individuals for the wind energy sector.


Since the 2000’s, activity in the onshore and offshore wind energy sector has grown and new and existing skills were required to support the companies involved in this sector.


One of the first projects that IRS Recruitment were involved in was with the engineering and construction of the Ness Point wind turbine that has become a landmark for Lowestoft area. The company provided human resources to assist with the environmental impact studies, design and engineering, procurement and construction activities.


SHERINGHAM SHOAL PROJECT The company was also involved in assisting with the preparation of the licence application for the Sheringham Shoal project for the Anglo/Dutch consortium who were eventually awarded the development licence for this field. This field is currently being developed.


the supply of construction, inspection and offshore personnel on both the Humber Gateway and Dudgeon Offshore windfarms.

IRS Recruitment TRANSFERABLE SKILLS


Whilst there were very few individuals who had knowledge and experience of this sector it became clear that many of the skill sets engaged in the oil & gas sector were transferable to the renewable sector. This transfer of skill sets has continued over the years and it is pleasing to see that East Anglia is now able to offer many of the skills and services required as this sector continues to grow.


IRS Recruitment has been supplying high calibre skills to the UK oil & gas sectors since the early 1990’s and the renewable energy sector since the early 2000’s supplying many of the skill sets required for these sectors and their supply chain.
