TRENCHING

REMOTE LOCATION CONSIDERATIONS Firstly, the routing of the cable must take into account the seabed topography to ensure the existing burial equipment can adequately protect the cable. This leads to longer cable requirements, an increase in CAPEX and longer installation and burial operations, which in turn, increase the OPEX.

The Hi-Traq uses a unique self-levelling system to provide a horizontal chassis even whilst traversing side slopes of up to 20°. This allows a vertical, stable trench to be made for safe and efficient cable burial operations across the challenging topography. The self-levelling system allows the Hi-Traq to trench a more direct cable route which can lead to a reduction in both CAPEX and OPEX for the developer.

VARYING SOIL CONDITIONS Furthermore, the soil conditions at offshore renewable locations can change over relatively short distances. Such changes in the seabed can lead to a requirement of different forms of equipment in order to cope with the varying soil conditions. For example, in the Liverpool Bay area, the variable soil conditions meant the ploughs and jetting tools applied were unable to perform all of the burial operations and mechanical

cutting trenchers were required to complete installation. Hi-Traq has been developed as a multi-tool platform with the capacity to perform both jetting and mechanical cutting operations which facilitates burial in variable conditions without the requirement to bring in expensive, secondary, spot-market equipment.

DEDICATED VEHICLE

As the industry continues to work towards lowering the LCOE there is a requirement to bring in new technologies to benefit from the increased efficiencies, cost reductions and the reduction in overall project risk they can provide. By developing a dedicated vehicle for the operational conditions of offshore renewable installation, IHC has addressed many of the issues faced by existing assets.

The drive to make offshore renewable energy cost competitive, depends on progress right across the supply chain and installation contractors. The technology built into Hi-Traq will be a major contributor towards achieving the goals of the offshore renewables industry.
