EAST OF ENGLAND INTRODUCTION

SPOTLIGHT ON... EASTOFENGLAND

THE POWERHOUSE FOR WIND ENERGY

REGULARS TO OUR MAGAZINE WILL NOTE THAT WE HAVE VISITED THIS IMPORTANT AREA TO OUR INDUSTRY ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS OR SO.

EAST OF ENGLAND SPECIAL EDITION

You will find that this is the most expansive area spotlight feature yet covering more than 70 pages – we have therefore decided to devote the vast majority of the magazine to the area and name this issue of Wind Energy Network ‘The East of England Special Edition’.

REGIONAL SUPPLY CHAIN MATRIX You will also find within this edition a pull-out-and-keep supplement which is a matrix of up to 100 supply chain companies and the services that they offer, specifically to the wind energy industry.

HOW TIMES CHANGE!

It is interesting to note that when the Cley Windmill in Norfolk (Circa 1819) was commissioned there were demonstrations about how the environment would be damaged by the sight of such a monstrosity! Following many alterations and ownerships, mostly as a family home, the mill was lovingly restored to its former glory during the 2000s.

Moving on to the present day the OrbisEnergy building in Lowestoft, Suffolk very wisely constructed a very modern wind turbine ‘Goliath’, which serves as a renewable energy source to this state- of-the-art office complex (where our Southern office is based). Time moves on and despite some vocal critics the general public are very much in favour of onshore wind to the tune of some 70%, following the most recent survey.

SCROBY SANDS WIND FARM There were also wide-held negative opinions about the construction of the Scroby Sands offshore wind farm just off Caister-on-Sea/ Gt Yarmouth and yet now the E.on visitors information centre is one of the most visited attractions in the East of England.

EAST ANGLIA ONE ANNOUNCEMENT As the supply chain in the East of England prepares to compete for work with developers of the world’s largest wind farm, East Anglia One, to be built off its coast and the timetable for the next Contracts for Difference auction next year has been announced, industry expert Johnathan Reynolds says there is still a strong chance that the Galloper wind farm to be developed under the previous funding mechanism, Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs), and that East of England businesses can be confident of the development of many more offshore wind farms off its coast.

For the area, the consent was a clear government commitment to view the East of England as the UK’s chosen offshore wind farm powerhouse for the future.
