Thriving club celebrates 50 years at headquarters

MEMBERS of Ham Hill Working Mens Club, Snodland celebrated the 50th anniversary of the opening of its building inMalling Road. Andy Manser ran the disco, a

Blues Brothers tribute band played to a packed house and lovely weather meant the barbecue and bouncy castle were a success. Club president David Jarmyn

said: "It was good to see so many of our members here.We have had a lot of good feedback." The club was opened on April 3

1965 by Mr A E G Brain, manager of the NatWest Bank, Maidstone, which had lent the club the money to complete the building. The club's oldest member, Dick

Hall (91), told Town Talk that the original club was an old hut used by the cavalry inWorldWar I. Afterthe waritwas left empty

and three people, Mr Hunt, Mr Procter and Mr Friend, decided to buy it. "Theydid nothaveenough money so they went to the Friendly Society and borrowed the money but could only afford the hut as it stood but not the ground," he said. AfterWorldWar II the club hired a

steward, Harry Frier, and his wife Liz,who lived in the back of the hut in space thatwas used as a kitchen and a bedroom by the Army. Veterans from World War I, the

Moths (Memorable Order of the Tin Hats Shell Hole Hill 60), came from the Nevill Bull public house, Birling and local people joined the club. A committeewas formed and the first trustees were Ron Earl, George Kingsbury and Albert Capeling. A fundwas started for a new club

with a loan from NatWest Bank. Les Parsons had bought the land and he told the club that if it moved the site of the building to one side so he could make a road to a house he wanted to build, he

President David Jarmyn and former stewardess Mary Stevenson (left) with steward and stewardess, Phil and Carol Stevenson

would let the club have the land on a 99-year lease. When he dies the club will own

the land. Dick, who has a daughter, Moya,

and worked for Holoplast, Reed PaperMill and Kimberly Clark, said a lot of people from Snodland joined and it became a thriving club for many years. David said the club was in a bad

state a few years ago, but steward and stewardess Phil and Carol Stevenson, who joined six years ago, had turned its fortunes round. "It is a thriving club now and we

have a very good team, including our secretary for 10 years, Kay Webb, who work well together.”
