Warehousing plan for KIG site

ADEVELOPERis gearingupto do battle with residents of Holling- bourne and Bearsted as it presses ahead with a proposal for an in- dustrial development on part of the land once earmarked for KIG. Roxhill Developments made a presentation to Hollingbourne Parish Council in the Cardwell Pavilion, arguing that the scheme would actually enhance the coun- tryside, rather than detract from it. Roxhill is distributing 2,000 leaflets to homes in the area sup- porting its planning application, due to be submitted as the Downs Mailwent to press, which includes planting 7,000 trees, enhancing the waterways and creating ponds for wildlife. Development director Charles

Blake says it is essential that mod- ern industrial developments are lo- cated near motorway junctions and believes his scheme could provide up to 1,200 jobs. The site allocated by Roxhill is at Woodcut Farm – part of the contro-

lights back on STREET lights which had been turned off overnight in residen- tial areas to save money will be going back on again, thanks to KCC’s decision to switch to LED bulbs. The switch-off from Decem-

ber 2013 was met with wide- spread criticism from residents, but now the county council is to invest £40 million in a centrally- controlled lighting system. The LED – light emitting

diode – system will be moni- tored remotely, allowing faults to be detected and repaired quickly. The work will be fi- nanced by a £22m interest-free loan from the Government and it was hoped to obtain further funding from the EU.

versial site rejected by a planning inspector five years ago for the Kent International Gateway (KIG), a 112- hectare road and rail freight depot. The Roxhill site would see 4.8 hectares developed and have park- ing for 560 cars. Mr Blake claims the company would create a wood- land area buffer to the west, sepa- rating it from the residential part of Ashford Road. Once developed, Roxhill would

plan to sell the industrial part of the site to a land-holding company, while handing the woodland to a local trust or parish council. It is believed the company is al-

ready in discussion with two pos- sible tenants for the site, which would contain 14 warehouses, in- dustrial and office buildings. A similar warehouse plan for

Waterside Park, on the opposite side of the A20 Ashford Road, has twice been thrown out by Maid- stone Council and is now the sub- ject of an appeal, due to be heard in May.
