Cricketing stars support bid to save village club

SPORTING stars have thrown their bats into the ring to support a 200-year-old cricket club who fear they could be on the brink of collapse. Yalding Cricket Club, which

were founded more than 200 years ago, have never recovered from the floods which tore the village apart in December 2013. Players have drifted off to other

clubs and a huge amount of repair work has been needed to the pavil- ion, which was virtually sub- merged at one point. Ashes heroes Geraint and Simon

Jones, Kent captain Rob Key and commentators Henry Blofeld and JonathanAgnew have all joined the club’s plea for new members, in order to keep the club afloat. While the club have done what

they can to repair the damage to the pavilion on The Kintons, inVic- arage Road, the financial burden has proved an insurmountable challenge, according to club secre- tary Jonathan Fenn. He said: “The money needed just to get the pavilion to useable con-

He said: “Despite a thriving jun-

ior section that is providing young- sters in the village with a great setting to learn the game, the finan- cial situation of the club means they are struggling to continue into the 2015 season. With a lack of senior members on their books, fielding a team for the 2015 season looks to be a real challenge.” The club currently have just 10

senior players on their books and will struggle to field a team for the 2015 season, which starts in May. With the season getting closer,

downsmail.co.uk Caravan plan

turned down MAIDSTONE Council has turned down a proposal for a mobile home and touring caravan for gypsy use in Chart Sutton. A report said the proposed de-

velopment – caravan, hardstanding and gates – would be clearly visible from Green Lane to the west and there would be no natural screen- ing to mitigate the visual impact on the open countryside. It added: “No exceptional cir- cumstances have been put forward to override the policy to restrict de- velopment in the countryside.” Chart Sutton Parish Council had

raised an objection, claiming the planning application lacked details of landscaping and building mate- rials. Neighbours also complained that they would be overlooked.
