Villagers’ fury at plan for homes

RESIDENTShave voiced their dis- may at the prospect of another 28 new homes in Headcorn. Wealden Homes has lodged a planning application to extend its development in Grigg Lane after previously being given the go- ahead for 20 homes behind The Hardwicks and 25 homes at Chance Holdings. As we went to press, objections

were piling up on Maidstone Coun- cil's website. Neighbour Ruth Cooper wrote: “Iamfed up with re- peated applications for additional housing in Headcorn when the vil- lage currently does not have enough space at the school; drains that can cope with the current volume of housing; enough parking for exist- ing residents. “When new housing is provided

it often gets allocated to people from outside Headcorn when those who

were born in the village get allo- cated housing outside the village which is totally impractical for them. “Plus, Maidstone Council has

turned down new housing at pres- ent, so why is this even being con- templated? Is the council hoping to wear people down until they can't be bothered to complain?” Another neighbour, Irene Os-

borne, wrote: “No new school. No change in sewage problems. No change in flood control. No new traffic solution.Whyis the planning office in Maidstone not dismissing this application at once and saving Headcorn people the headache of objecting again?” The applicant's supporting state-

ment claims the proposal would en- able the introduction of open space and nature conservation areas on the site.

Correction IN the Boughton Monchelsea Parish Council section on page 38 of last month’s Downs Mail, we wrote that the parish council’s in- surer, Zurich, had confirmed that the parish council had inadequate insurance for Parkwood Farm reservoir. This was incorrect: the parish council has adequate insur- ance for the reservoir. We would like to apologise for this error.
