Nancy Paul of Orange Lutheran High School poses with her SCIBCA award.

Paul has coached a variety of sports since 1961, as well as teaching English, math and physical education. As a statisti- cian, she has become a fixture on the field and in the gym. Big trout break loose at Irvine Lake

By Steve Carson

Big trout are on the chew with a 14-1 Nebraska Tailwalker weigh- ing in as Whopper of the Week. A good number of 8- to 10-pound- ers were hooked, and more 5- to 6-pounders than could be record- ed.

Good stringers of trout were checked in at the west shore, Trout Island and mid-lake, but both trollers and bait dunkers no- ticed the fish beginning to slide deeper into the water column. PowerBait and nightcrawlers were the best reported choice in baits, while Rapalas and Needle- fish were favored for trolling. Bass anglers

mum again this week about any truly oversize bucketmouths, but the reports were sizzling about the numerous 2- to 4-pound largemouth biting just about ev- erywhere there were submerged grass beds in five to 10 feet of water. Topwaters, Berkley Jerk Shads, and a variety of plastics all garnered strikes. Some 3- to 6-pound channel catfish were

caught near Rocky Point using mackerel and shrimp baits, but few, if any, anglers put forth ef- fort for panfish. Families with children 12 and under found reasonable success in the Kids Lagoon using Power Bait for 1- to 3-pound trout. Surface temp on the main lake is 66 degrees, with underwater visibility at an average of six to eight feet. The lake level is rising slowly, and is newly stocked with rainbows and browns. Remember the big Sierra in the

City tournament on April 18. Call (714) 649-9111 for more infor- mation.

Recent outstanding catches include: Eric Rangel, Orange: 9-5 Ne- braska Tailwalker on PowerBait at Trout Island Bill Wright, Orange: 9-10 rain- bow on a Johnson Splinter at the west shore Wes Wright, Orange: 4-7 steel- head on a Rapala at mid-lake Don Spencer, Silverado: 4-8 largemouth bass (released) on plastics at the flats.
