Foothills Sentry School budget constraints can sometimes cause cre-

ative juices to flow. Such was the case at Chapman Hills Elementary School in East Orange, when a PTA-spon- sored jog-a-thon raised $28,000 to hire an extra creden- tialed teacher to help reduce class size. The initial fundraising goal was $16,000; the “stretch” goal was $26,000. Students were promised an ice cream party, and Principal Sandra Schaffer told them she would kiss a pig if the goal was met. In addi- tion, classes were given individual goals, and teachers encouraged the effort by agreeing to do something silly on jog-a-thon day if their class met its mark. Seven classes reached their individual goals, so Mike Higgins, a fourth fifth grade teacher, dressed as a cheer- leader; Susan Church, third grade, sat still for a bucket of green slime to be decanted over her head; and Jane Kogutek, second-third grade, dressed as a clown. Four other teachers came to school with their hair dyed bright colors.

Following years of state budget cuts, the Chapman Mike Higgins struts his stuff as a cheerleader.

Hills PTA took over financial responsibility from the district to fund an extra teacher. A certificated teacher is needed to break up students into smaller learning groups during math and language arts instruction. Average class sizes in OUSD elementary schools are 30-plus students.

A lower student/teacher ratio allows students to learn in smaller, level- appropriate groups. Smaller class sizes have been proven to improve student success. The PTA started the annual jog-a-thon to raise funds from the Chap-

man community. This year, the participation rate among school fami- lies was 83 percent. The amount raised above the stretch goal will go to technology purchases and P.E. equipment.

Susan Church puts on a brave smile as her delighted students douse her in green slime.
