Tourist Profile
Riverside retreat The river’s important role in Maidstone’s history is reflected in some of the landmarks along its banks. The Archbishop’s Palace was used by the archbishops of Canterbury as a stopover when making the long journey to London. These days, it is the home of the town’s register office and provides a stunning backdrop for the many wedding ceremonies which are held there. Housed in the 14th century palace stables is the Maidstone Carriage Museum, a unique collection of horse-drawn vehicles, once owned by 12-times Mayor of Maidstone Sir Garrard Tyrwhitt-Drake. There are more than 60 vehicles, from grand vehicles such as Queen Victoria’s state landau to antique sedan chairs. Another landmark in this picturesque riverside setting is the ancient church of All Saints’, known as “one of the grandest perpendicular churches in England”.
Dockyard delights For naval history buffs, the ultimate experience awaits a few miles down river at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham. The huge site is a treasure trove of maritime history including a wide range of attractions, iconic buildings and famous ships to explore. For more than 400 years until its closure in 1984, Chatham Dockyard produced and repaired ships for the Royal Navy, including Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory. It now provides a home for the submarine HMS Ocelot and the World War II destroyer HMS Cavalier. The dockyard has recently taken on a new claim to fame, being much in demand as a film set for productions including the TV series Call The Midwife and the movie blockbuster Les Miserables. Nearby is the Dockside Outlet Centre – a magnet for bargain
hunters, and Dickens World which offers a 90-minute interactive tour of Victorian England.
CASTLES BY THE RIVER
Allington Castle Known as one of Kent’s best kept secrets, beautiful Allington Castle nestles in 42 acres next to the River Medway. It is privately owned and not generally open to the public but you can see it from the towpath near the Malta Inn. Dating back to medieval times, the castle is often used as a film set and accommodates weddings and other functions. Private tours by organised groups can be arranged.
Rochester Castle Guarding an important crossing point on the River Medway, and the old road to London, Rochester Castle is one of the best preserved keeps in England and well worth a visit. The castle is open daily and its gardens are an ideal picnic spot. Across the road, the ancient cathedral is also worth visiting.
