10 REASONS TO VISIT FAVERSHAM in 2015

In the year of the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, Faversham unveils its hidden treasure.

At any time of the year visiting Faversham is definitely a treat, but whether you are looking for a fascinating day out or a short break, there could not be a better time than this spring to visit Kent’s oldest market town, located on a winding creek and boasting about 500 listed buildings.

Dubbed the county’s “Market Town of Kings” because of its links with English monarchs for more than 1,000 years, this lively and historic town has an amazing array of independent shops and street markets, a reputation for fine food and fascinating places to visit.

It is also home to one of the most important historical documents ever produced.

1. Magna Carta Rediscovered

This year is the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta in 1215 by King John. This “Great Charter” was the foundation stone of democracy. Widely

regarded as England’s greatest export, it has brought freedom to people throughout the world and was influential in America’s Declaration of Independence in 1776. Celebrations marking the anniversary will take place throughout the UK and across the world and Faversham can boast a special right to be part of these as the proud owner of an edition of Magna Carta dated 1300. It is the last reissue of the document and features King Edward I’s seal. This rarely displayed and valuable Magna Carta will be on display when it forms the centrepiece of Magna Carta Rediscovered, a major free Kent touring exhibition, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which will be staged in the town from May 23 until June 28. Magna Carta Rediscovered will feature interactive displays

remainder of the Faversham Charter Collection, said to be one of the largest archives of municipal charters in the UK, 17 in all, dating back to 1252. Magna Carta Rediscovered, at the Alexander Centre, Preston Street is open daily between 10am and 4pm (last admission 3.30pm with 7.30pm late opening on Thursdays), May 23-June 28. Admission is free. A full programme of Magna Carta and medieval-themed events has been planned for Faversham this year. For more information go to www.faversham.org/magnacarta.
