Through many centuries, the Medway became a major trading route for the towns and villages along its banks. Nowadays, industry is still important but recent years have seen a huge growth in leisure use of the waterway. From its humble origins as a mere trickle from a spring near Turners Hill in East Sussex, the river flows through the High Weald, through the Hartfield and Groombridge areas, on to Tunbridge Wells and Tonbridge, then to Yalding and Maidstone. It grows much wider as it passes the Medway Towns and finally joins the Thames estuary between Sheerness and the Isle of Grain.
Ancient castles, historic villages and
tranquil wildlife sites are dotted along its 70-mile course. There are also busy shopping centres and interesting visitor attractions to explore. Whether you like to get active or would rather just sit and watch the wild birds and water voles, there are many ways to enjoy this majestic stretch of water.
