SPORTS By Cliff Robbins

COMMUNITY Women in sports February is designated Na-

tional Women in Sports month, designed to recognize sports achievements, the positive influ- ence of sports participation and the continuing need for equality and access to sports opportunities for women. The National Association for

Girls and Women in Sports, a di- vision of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, encour- ages students, sports educators, coaches and athletic directors to attend a special event celebrating female athletes every February.

In 2004, the Orange County

Athletic Directors Associa- tion (OCADA) held a women in sports conference for high school student-athletes to hear personal, inspirational stories from current and former female athletes. To- day, OCADA hosts over 1,300 girls from 64 Orange County high schools at its yearly event. The conference was held Feb. 24 at the Mariners Campus in Irvine, where speakers included Trisha Stafford- Odom, college basketball coach; Suzy Brazney, softball player and coach; and Jen Schroeder, athlete and motivational speaker.

Foothills Sentry In an amazing comeback that

left one Godinez High School basketball player frozen, an in- bound pass went a little too high and hit the ceiling of a packed Foothill gym. Only 1.1 second re- mained in the quarterfinal game, with Foothill down two points. Foothill inbounded the ball under its own basket, and Lucas Araujo was fouled. He hit both free throw shots to tie the game at 45-45 and send it into overtime. Foothill then went on the rampage, with Araujo scoring 11 of the team’s 14 points in overtime to win, 59- 49. “No doubt, it was an amazing comeback. We lost a little energy, but I was able to get my shots,” Araujo said after the game. Head coach Rusty Van Cleve said, “I’m happy to be here and real happy for the players. Araujo hit some clutch shots. They came well- prepared.” Brandon Smith, a 6’5” senior,

scored a game high 22 points for Godinez. Smith had numer- ous blocked shots and eight rebounds. For Foothill, Riley O’Hern scored a team high 21 points and Araujo, 18. O’Hern also scored a game

high 27 points against Peninsula High School in the semifinals, putting Foothill (27-3) into the Division 1A Boys CIFSS basket- ball finals.
