Tustin High School T-Tech engineering students build electric guitars
By Ed Hernandez Students from Tustin High
School’s T-Tech’s Engineering Academy recently finished a pilot electric guitar building program. Yes, high school students made their own real, playable electric guitars. The eight-week exer- cise was supported by the STEM Guitars Project, sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The ubiquitous electric guitar
is an amazing tool for educa- tion, incorporating computer de- sign, physics, math, electronics, manual skills and of course mu- sic. Built from scratch, students first design their guitar shape in
VP blood drive saves lives
The Thomas Real Estate Group’s annual blood drive may be
credited with saving 74 lives this year. Organizers thank Rock- wells, N2 Creamery, Incredi-
bowlz, the City of Villa Park and First Class Pizza for pitching
in to make this event a success. The Thomas Group also thanks the citizens of Villa Park for participating.
Library in
“OverDrive” The Anaheim Public Library
will again participate in Over- Drive’s global eBook club event, Big Library Read, March 17-31. Unlimited, simultaneous users may borrow Laura Bates’ true story, Shakespeare Saved My Life, using their Anaheim Pub- lic Library card, without holds or waitlists for this title. Avail- able formats include Kindle, EPUB, OverDrive Read and PDF. Readers can engage with others through Laura’s Goodreads Fan Page as well as her Facebook page. Bates’ autobiography was se-
lected by a majority vote from librarians and readers. It details her experience teaching Shake- spearean works to inmates in soli- tary confinement. Larry Newton, a convicted murderer with several escape attempts and a brilliantly agile mind, begins a most un- likely friendship with Laura, who was fighting to get her program started in prisons. For further information, con-
tact Cynthia Hicks, East Region supervising librarian, Anaheim Public Library, (714) 765-6442.

ROOM STYLING Before and after pictures

Imagine walking into your home to a beautifully decorated room...
SolidWorks 3D CAD software and cut it with a ShopBot CNC mill. Afterwards only a small amount of shaping and sanding remain. The neck and headstock are shaped by hand and the fret- board is painstakingly assembled fret by fret. The guitar bodies are laser
engraved and/or painted before being sprayed with a protective coat. Wiring the guitar’s insides is a lesson in electronics, students learn how volume and tone con- trols work, as well as basic elec- tronics theory and the physics of how a metal string’s vibration gets amplified into sound. And the guitars really work. Now, we
need to take guitar lessons… Tustin High School’s T-Tech
Technology and Engineering Academy is a four-year pro- gram wherein science, math and technology are brought to life. T-Tech students are enrolled in one STEM class for each year of the program, culminating with a project-based senior capstone class. By the end of the pro- gram, all T-Tech students will have a portfolio, resume and a wealth of hands-on technical knowledge and expertise not available anywhere else. Over 85 percent of all new jobs in the coming years will require STEM skills.
