OABB youth explore veterinary medicine By Bishop Evans, OABB reporter
Members of Orange Acres
Back Breakers 4-H Club (OABB) Veterinary Medicine Project en- joyed a scientific expedition to Arbor Animal Hospital in Irvine. OABB has earned favor through- out the animal community by raising goats, steers, horses, poul- try, dogs, and rabbits. This group was allowed spe-
cial entry to the facility. There, they observed the pharmacy where medicines are kept; they looked through microscopes and observed different types of dis- eases on histology slides; learned how to prepare for a surgery and keep a sterile field; learned about an autoclave, which is a pressur- ized steam vessel that sterilizes surgical instruments; learned how anesthesia is processed and ap- plied to animals; and observed an anesthetized-assisted canine dental cleaning. In addition, they were privileged to watch two ac- tual benign tumor removal sur- geries: one from the eyelid of one animal, and one from another’s back. They also discovered how some of the veterinarians decided on such a career.
Irvine Regional Park Nature Center was the grateful recipient of a life-size, hand-carved and painted bald eagle crafted from a single piece of wood by artist Roger Bates. The Patrick Russell family made the dedication to the nature center, Feb. 8. Shown here are Pat Rus- sell’s daughters, Sandy Pearson and Rusti Bates. Sandy’s husband Ken volunteers at the center.
