Foothills Sentry

Dog hero saves the

neighborhood Harley, a Lab-border collie mix,

woke up his family at 1:45 a.m. Valentine’s Day eve. He was agi- tated, growling and directing Or- ange residents Liz and Steve Fla- nagan to their sliding back door. Alerted by Harley’s “strange

behavior,” Steve Flanagan went to investigate, and discovered that a large eucalyptus tree on the property behind their home -- and just 10 feet from their neigh- bor’s fence -- was fully engulfed in flames. Embers were blowing onto nearby houses. The Flanagans called 911 and

alerted their neighbors, who were all sound asleep. The fire depart- ment arrived in time to quash the flames before they spread. The Flanagans and their neighbors credit Harley with saving their houses from a potential inferno.
