SANTA ROSA, CA, ~ March, with its unpredictable weather, is full of surprises. Colorful tu- lips, daffodils, sprouting seeds, amazing blossoms are all com- ing alive. It seems everything is waking up. Evenings and early mornings are still chilly but the days are beginning to heat up quickly. Wind chimes are singing their songs again and cool winds are dancing and swirling about under the rich azure of sky. In the Amaryllidaceae family

They can be grown indoors or on a shaded porch in a big pot although they like to be root bound, crowded and divided every 3-5 years. Blooming in late February and early March their stunning clusters of trum- pet shaped thick stemmed up- right fl owers bloom in shades of orange, red, salmon or creamy yellow and can brighten even the dreariest of winters.

Natives are so happy and given compatible soil and site they are easy to grow. My young hedge of Ribes aureum var. villosum, also called Ri- bes odoratum, is thickening up, tangling, tiny new branch- es starting to form the dense thicket of hedge. Birds will build their precious, tiny nests inside as well as wildlife and people alike savoring the tasty currants. The clove fragrance of

A couple of young boys were fi shing at their special pond off the beaten track. All of a sudden, the Game Warden jumped out of the bushes. Immediately, one of the boys threw his rod down and started running through the woods like a bat out of hell. The Game Warden was hot on his heels. After about a half mile, the young man stopped and stooped over with his hands on his thighs to catch his breath, so the Game Warden fi nally caught up to him. “Let’s see yer fi shin’ license, Boy!” the Warden gasped. With that, the boy pulled out his wallet and gave the Game War- den a valid fi shing license. “Well, son,” said the Game Warden. “You must be about as dumb as a box of rocks!
