12 • March 2015 A Decade of Digging up the Earth! Santa Rosa, Ca. ~ Donald

McGuire, owner of Pop’s Af- fordable Rototilling, has been in business for over a decade … almost. It started when Don’s son Scott, a farmer in Oregon, took an offi ce job. Having no further use for a rototiller, he offered it to “Pop”. Pop, who

lives with his wife Barbara on a 50’ x100’ lot in Santa Rosa didn’t have much use for an eight horsepower, 36 inch til- ler, but he took it anyway. With a few small posters at garden centers and grocery stores, he was in the rototilling business. It was only a couple of years

before Scott became dis- enchanted with inside offi ce work and decided to return to the land. So Pop’s rototiller went back to the land with him. Pop was out of business! Not for long. He talked to Homer and Cindy at Fulwider Outdoor Power Equipment. They gave him a good deal on an excellent BCS rototiller similar to Scott’s, but a wee bit smaller. Pop says he got an electric starter, too, “in deference to my age”. ( Pop recently cele- brated his 82nd birthday.) Asked why he keeps on rototilling, Pop responds that he enjoys working outside, gets good exer-

cise, and “I’ve met some re- ally nice people”. “Rototilling is not the kind of job that will make you rich” he says, “ but for some reason, people who grow gardens are just really good people … and I haven’t met them all yet!”
