As the night went on, German dressage legend Isabell

Werth, who was thrilled to compete against the back- drop of the city skyline, had the crowd dancing along to the beat of a David Bowie compilation as she and El Santo NW scored 82.04 percent to win the $40,000 Dres- sage Challenge, presented by Axel Johnson AB. “It’s a special event,” comments Isabell, who was visit-

ing NYC for just the second time. “If you arrive in New York and go here through Central Park, you can’t imag- ine that you will compete here in this arena. It was a lot of fun and a pleasure to be here.” It was not the first time a horse show took place in

Central Park, (previously a show was held on the Sheep’s Meadow, north of the new location), but it was the first time that the skating rink was transformed into an arena, stables were constructed behind Heckscher Playground, and world-class riders were seen strolling between the two in their show attire. The city’s famous carriage horses trotting over the bridge as world-class sport horses walked below on their way to compete created a surreal tableau. Looking forward, the organizers say they will now

plan an even greater event in the “Big Apple.” 2014, they say, was just to test the waters and make sure they could really pull it off—which they did, in fabulous New York City style.
