mare bases in Germany, with approximately 13,500 mares and more than 500 stallions. Te quality of the horses speaks for itself with gold medal winners such as La Biosthetique Sam ridden by Michael Jung rep- resenting the DSP at the 2012 London Olympics. DSP Belantis by Benetton Dream just won the five-year- old class at the 2014 Bundeschampionate in War- endorf. Other familiar names in the news are WEG eventing stars Fisher Rocana FST, ridden by Michael Jung, and Chilli Morning, ridden by William Fox Pitt.
Before they were Deutsches Sportpferd… Te RPSI shares a long history of selective breeding for sport with its parent organization, the PRPS of Ger- many. Te territory of the Rheinland-Pfalz-Saar lies along the Rhine River in southwest Germany. Duke Christian IV established the state stud at Zweibrücken in 1755, while the modern PRPS registry was formed in 1977.
In 1992 the PRPS built Pferdezentrum, a new
equestrian center and offices near Standenbuhl, Ger- many. Te registry offers sales and training, as well as auctions and events from this central location, and is proud to be one of the few breed associations in Germany with its own riding and training facili- ties. In 1995 the PRPS expanded into North America and the RPSI was born. Te original Zweibrücker horse,
according to Stud Book Director Otto Schalter, was a light riding horse of el- egant type. In fact, when the Trakehner
breed was founded, 160 Zweibrücker stallions were imported to Trakehnen for breeding. Many of those Zweibrücker horses ended up in the Trakehner stud books marked as ‘most influential.’ “Te Zweibrücker was never a really heavy horse,” Otto says. “Unlike many other regions, we
had to actually build more size and body, rather than really refine.”
RPSI Horses and Ponies in Sport Tere are some excellent Zweibrückers in sport in North America, including L’Etoile, Paradox, Cola and Cedric, the latter ridden by Wilhelm and Teo Genn, and Horses Unlimited’s GP dressage stallion Leonberg. North American-born Zweibrückers include Daniel Geitner’s Grand Prix jumper Sympa (Sabotage x Sum- mit Peak), October Hill Farm’s Oley OHS and Con-
cho OHF by Cascani, EWSZ’s Qualle by Quebec who was top in the USEF five-year-old jumpers, as well as EWSZ La Ola and EWSZ Le Vin Rouge, both Gold Premium as foals, who finished in the top of the 4- and 6-Year-Old divisions. Plus Buck Davidson’s eventer BeMine (born EWSZ Juniper by Daimler d’Adrier x VPrSt/PrSport La Bonita) won at the one star in Bromont. Te RPSI is
also dedicated to supporting its pony breed- ers—the most up-and-coming segment of the registry. While small in stature, the German Riding Pony can accomplish big things. Te
