CLASS NOTES Melba Jean Heyser Torkelson ’45


Melba Jean Heyser Torkelson died October 23, 2010, at the age of 82. Born February 5, 1928, Melba immersed herself in life through her family, friends, community, charities, sports, and travel. Born to Norman and Agnes Heyser, Melba attended St. Helen’s Hall and Lincoln High School. She attended the University of Oregon, where she joined the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, making lifelong friends. She met and fell in love with Harold Torkelson, and they were married after college. Melba and Harold enjoyed 58 years together before he passed away in November 2007. Melba leaves behind her children,


Carrie Guy and husband, Tim; Linnea Torkelson; Bryn and his wife, Janice; and Eric and his wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Danielle and Grady Guy, Niklas, Raymond, and Joseph Torkelson, and Alex, Ben, and Claire Torkelson; and her sister, Norma Heyser.


Julie Franchere Hinds ’50 Julie Victoire Franchere Hinds passed


away peacefully on November 21, 2010, with her husband Hugh, daughter Mary, and son Michael at her side. Julie was born in Springfield, Illinois,


to Hoyt and Ruth Franchere. Julie spent her early years in the Midwest before settling in Oregon in 1940. She graduated from St. Helen’s Hall in 1950. That year she was a finalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search


Louis Fred Fernandez, 59, was a parent


of two OES students and a very active volunteer at the school. Born April 21, 1951, in Anniston, Alabama, to Louis and Katherine Fernandez, Lou grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, the oldest of five children. As a freshman at Dartmouth College in 1969, he discovered his passion—computer science. After working in Hanover, New Hampshire, as a computer programmer, Lou returned

After a stint working at the RAND Corporation, she returned to Portland to pursue teaching. She wed her husband of 50 years, E. Hugh Hinds, in 1959, and they raised their family in Lake Oswego.


Lou Fernandez


to Washington University in St. Louis for his Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering. Upon graduation in 1981, he moved to Boston where he worked for Hewlett-Packard and BBN Technologies. In Boston, Lou met his wife-to-be, Linda Blakely. They enjoyed hosting memorable dinner parties and holiday gatherings. In 1988 Lou and Linda married. In 1990 they moved to Portland, where they both worked for Sequent Computer Systems. Lou was a proud father of two children with whom he shared his love of reading, math, science, and food. In 2000, he became a full-time father. He was a dedicated classroom volunteer, rarely missing his children’s weekly library visits or science sessions, and he served as treasurer of Friends of the OES Library (FOESL). Lou was able to live a full and pain-


free life during his two-year battle with brain cancer. With his family beside him, he died peacefully January 2, 2011, in hospice at the Martha and Mary Home in Portland. Lou donated his body to the OHSU School of Medicine. He is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Matthew ’12; and daughter, Marie ’16. He is also survived by his mother, Katherine; sister, JoAnn; and brothers, James, Thomas, and Michael. A memorial service was held January 8 in the OES chapel. Contributions in Lou’s honor may be made to the Friends of the OES Library or to the Martha and Mary Home.
