REIGATE’S BEST KEPT SECRET... M

CELEBRITY CHEF TONY TOBIN’S DINING ROOM

any will already know Tony from his appearances on BBC’s Ready, Steady, Cook, those Colman’s adverts and more recently as a popular columnist. Tony and the Tobin family are intimately involved

in all aspects of the restaurant. The service and style reflect the character of the Chef Patron and on arrival we were greeted and seated by Tony himself. He is a great believer that personal service is the key to the survival of Independents and it shows. The Tobin rule is always buy fresh local ingredients promoting real food family eating and Tony always explains everything.

Dining Room caters for 80 covers and offers a British modern menu with an international twist. Tony has introduced great value lunches Monday to Fridays with two courses for just £16.96 or three courses for £24.95 changing every fortnight. There is a superb set menu for two courses at £31.95 that includes fillet steak, and even a classic Sunday Roast. For a gourmet experience try his Tasting Menu of 5 courses at £85 with wine selection. The wine menu is most impressive from a Chilean Merlot House red at just £18 to a bottle of Chateau Latour 1er Cru classe Payillace at £995 from The Private Cellar Collection! For starters, Tony rustled up melt-in-the-mouth large seared sea scallops with thai potato croquet, green mango, and chilli syrup from the A La Carte accompanied by a glass of delicate white Gavi. My partner’s ballotine of ham hock and pea puree with hash brown, sour dough and purple mustard dressing was one of the best they had tasted. Artistically presented, both dishes had the “wow” factor. For Mains my partner selected the maple syrup and five spice duck breast, retaining all its delicious juices, with a velvety potato puree, served with parsnip and carrot tatin, shallot and casis sauce. I tried simply the best fillet of beef with cauliflower and potato dauphinoise, spinach and tasty truffle dressing. The flavours were blended to perfection and my fillet cut like butter and was exquisitely cooked. To top it all, there’s a tantalising Desserts selection to round off this celebration of magical flavour combinations with treats to die for including Citronella Panna Cotta and Dark Chocolate Marquise. We can’t wait to visit The Dining Room again - so why not try it yourself?
