“On the architect’s initial plans the wall behind the basin went sideways, which meant the dressing room was separate and had no natural light, so we suggested laying the room out like this instead,” explains bathroom designer Martin Hammond. The result is one huge open-plan space that makes both the dressing area and bathroom feel considerably more impressive.

One of the couple’s ‘must haves’ was a striking master bathroom with a freestanding bath and double basin and they knew just the company to realise this. “We had worked with Lisa and Martin Hammond from Ripples Solihull on our last home and we always knew we would use them for the bathrooms in the new house,” Louisa elaborates. “They were great to work with and know our tastes, so our brief was basically just to give us an ensuite that matched the style of the rest of the house.”

The result is a spacious, contemporary sanctuary that’s as serene as it is luxurious. It was initially meant to be a bit smaller, as the architect had drawn up plans separating the bathroom and dressing room, but Martin felt that the layout wasn’t befitting of a multi-million-pound house. “Obviously architects aren’t always thinking ‘how can we give them the best bathroom’ which is how we think,” he points out. “The proposed space was okay, but it wasn’t five-star living, so I suggested combining the two rooms to make the overall space more impressive.”

Indeed it is. A lengthy, light-filled dressing room with gloss-white cupboards now fuses seamlessly with a large bathroom featuring an elegant freestanding bath, and separate WC and shower areas concealed by frosted glass doors. Matching ‘his and hers’ vanity areas, have been created in the dressing area, where there is plenty of natural light to get ready in the mornings.

For the materials and colour palette, inspiration came from the property’s picturesque surroundings, as Martin explains. “The house is set on a large plot with beautiful trees and woodland, so we took our cue from here – it gave us the idea for the wood-effect porcelain flooring, which we then toned in with other neutrals and greys that we knew the Taylors liked from their previous home.”

Cabinets have been recessed into the wall and concealed with mirrored doors, while sleek Dornbracht taps perfectly complement the modern Burgbad basins. “Dornbracht is our favourite brassware supplier when the budget allows and then the Taylors narrowed the choice down to the Lulu range,” says Martin.
