Holly was head girl at Hillview School for Girls in Tonbridge until she left in July 2014 to study dance at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire. While studying in the sixth form Holly decided to form her own independent dance troupe, called Viewpointe Dance
olly Thompson, a former pupil of Hillview School, is the latest winner of Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s prestigious
Company, in order to compete in the Dance World Cup, held in Portugal in July. She choreographed group, duet and quartet routines for the English Team Qualifi er Competition, winning the opportunity to represent England. The group then had to raise funds to cover the cost of airfares and accommodation, in total more than £9,000. They secured sponsorship from local companies, ran dance classes, held cake sales and performed at the Royal Victoria Hall to raise the funds to compete. There were more than 18,000 competitors in Portugal representing 34 countries. The girls entered the Junior Modern/Contemporary Category and won a bronze medal. Holly has since been offered a place at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona and is fundraising so that she can begin studying there in September.
West Kent College in Tonbridge is proud to display its new name – which is also its old name! The former K College, previously known as West Kent College, has now been in the hands of the Hadlow Group for almost six months and it has been awarded a “clean bill of health and money in the bank”, according to Mark Lumsdon- Taylor, Director of Finance and Resources at Hadlow College. West Kent College received a £700,000 investment last year as a result of meetings with banks and talks with the government together with private investment. This enabled the college to clear debts in order to start afresh. “We came to a settlement with the government to settle the debt,” explained Mr Lumsdon-Taylor. K College came into being when West Kent and South Kent Colleges merged back in 2010 but it ran into fi nancial diffi culties, resulting in a split of campuses, which include Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Ashford, Folkestone and Dover. Hadlow Group was selected as preferred bidder for the West Kent sites, having previously turned Hadlow College around from a college that was seen to be ‘failing’ to an Ofsted Outstanding institution. Paul Dubrow, Chair of Governors, said: “Much of what Hadlow has learnt is being introduced here and if we pull together as a team then it will work here too.” Apprenticeships and employment
programmes will play a big part in West Kent College’s ethos and a close working relationship with local businesses should enable the college to achieve this aim.
