Funding to help rough sleepers

Three local authorities have been awarded £250,000 to help homeless people to turn their lives around. Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, Maidstone Borough Council and Canterbury City Council joined forces to bid for the money to help those in the most serious need. One hundred rough sleepers across

the three areas will be identifi ed, and work will be carried out to make sure that they have a personally designed “pathway” to move from being street homeless to accessing and maintaining the most suitable accommodation for their needs. The funding will make

sure that access is available to housing advice, dentistry and GP services, mental health provision, help with drug and alcohol issues, food, washing facilities, translation services and a safe base. Councillor Lynne Weatherly, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Communities and Wellbeing at Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, said: “I am pleased that the three councils have been successful in the joint bid for the Single Homelessness Fund. The money will be put to good use to continue the excellent work that’s already being done locally to help reduce rough sleeping.”

We talk to Di Thomas, Chief Executive of Horder Healthcare Crowborough since 2001

What is your professional background? Prior to taking up my role as Chief Executive I gained experience working at a senior level within the charity, independent healthcare and NHS sectors. Prior to taking a number of management qualifi cations, including a Masters in Business Studies (MBA), I was a nurse by profession and gained a signifi cant amount of experience, working in different specialties, in different geographical locations. Before deciding to qualify as a nurse I held many different roles within hospitals, including being a hospital orderly, a care assistant and a physiotherapy aid.

What difference do you feel you can make to the running of the organisation? I think the biggest difference I have made since being Chief Executive is developing a vision of how our charity will achieve its purpose to create therapeutic environments which are a great place to work, practice medicine and receive care. I am truly passionate about leading the Horder Healthcare team to achieve this. Our work has a noticeably positive impact on the lives of individuals and their families.

Are there plans for further expansion? Our charitable purpose is to ‘advance health’ and we currently achieve this by providing musculoskeletal services, including elective orthopaedics to the population of South East Sussex and surrounding areas. We work very closely with local people, our patients, GPs and other key stakeholders, including private health insurers and the NHS to determine the needs of local healthcare services. We continually seek to improve and are currently actively searching for further opportunities to achieve our charitable aim to ‘advance health’.

How do you relax away from work? I enjoy swimming daily and aim to attend two yoga classes every week. I truly enjoy walking at the weekends and when travelling try to go skiing, with friends. My guilty pleasures are a good glass of wine and reading crime novels.
