No place like home

The fully-trained and caring staff at TerraBlu can help you or your relative stay in familiar surroundings as you get older

who don’t have children, the issue of care options available for people as they get older is once again in the news. The ongoing debate, of course, will be staying in your home versus going into a home and this will ultimately depend on the issues of mobility and dementia. However, while it is possible there are two key advantages to staying in your own home – being in familiar surroundings and cost. The fi rst enables you to have a familiar support network as you know your neighbours, the postman, have your local shop. If you have any pets this is also another consideration as many care homes will not let you bring them with you. Staying in your own home is particularly important for sufferers of dementia in the early stages as it allows them to connect with memories through their surroundings and can reduce confusion. The sooner help in the home is introduced the better, as getting help with odd jobs, or being taken out to a bowling club, the dentist or doctors can help to improve the length and quality of life at home. TerraBlu can offer you support and care to help you stay in your home as long as possible with fully-trained and compassionate staff. They are able to adapt to your needs and frequency – if you are only looking for minimal help there is no need to worry about signing up for an expensive or lengthy contract as visits can vary from as little as once a week, up to 21 times

W

ith the prediction that by 2030 there are likely to be two million people in the UK over the age of 65

a week, depending on the clients needs. Cancellations for a visit can be made with 24 hours’ notice or the entire contract can be cancelled with a week’s notice. An added bonus of TerraBlu carers is that they will help with chasing up home visits from doctors and district nurses as well as prescriptions from pharmacists, giving family members peace of mind that someone is checking in on them.

Cost options

Moving into a care home or nursing home can be substantially more expensive than having carers visit. TerraBlu can visit a client once a week for half-an-hour for as little as £12. One visit per day costs £100 per week, and for clients who want two visits a day to help them get up, have breakfast and take their medications, then in the evening have tea and help getting ready for bed, it costs £200 per week. The most dependent clients can have up to four visits a day at £400 a week. In comparison, if you wanted a live-in

carer this would cost around £700 a week, while a residential home would charge around £800-£900 a week and a nursing home, where specialist care is needed, would be £1,200-£1,400 a week. TerraBlu also hold their own social events

three or four times a year, the next is planned for the beginning of March with a winter lunch at the Day Centre on Camden Road in Tunbridge Wells. Age UK will provide transport and the event is free to TerraBlu clients. TerraBlu work closely with Age UK who offer a great range of cost-effective services,

including helping you to get your hair cut, learn computing skills and offering day centre facilities. TerraBlu can arrange to visit you before you are planned to be taken out by Age UK to make sure you are up and ready on time. A concierge service is also offered by

TerraBlu which can help you with tasks such as fi nding a gardener, getting a boiler fi xed or getting in an occupational therapist to assess your needs. TerraBlu also have a care ambassadors scheme as they believe the best people to talk about the standard of their services are the clients themselves. Betty, 93, says: “It is worthwhile. The people are awfully nice and will do anything for you – make your bed if you want to, do any housework. They also take me shopping.”

Madge, 82, has been using TerraBlu for

three years. She said: “I fi nd their care totally reliable, helpful and appropriate. They help me with bathing twice a week and do things to help me get going in the morning.” She added that they fi t in with her changing needs, show real respect and having the same carer visit each time means you have someone who knows exactly what you need. • TerraBlu and Age UK are holding a series of information evenings on what local services are available in Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks.
