Rainbows never cease to amaze me. When I see one, I stop everything I’m doing just to look at it. I thought of rainbows again when I read John Cath- cart’s words found on Page 2 of this issue of World Evangelism. That led me to thinking about the his- tory of one of the world’s most popular movies.


In 1939, MGM was putting the final touches on a movie based on a children’s literary classic. The Wizard of Oz had been in the works for a long time, but production had been delayed due to story and casting problems. The studio initially felt they had no one in their stable of stars who could play the lead, thus they tried to work out a deal to obtain Shirley Temple from Fox Studios in a one-picture deal. Because Fox also wanted MGM’s top star, Jean Harlow, for one of their films, the deal was almost worked out. But when Harlow tragically died in 1937,
