Page 7 Obesity Unit Quirón, Torrevieja, a secure solution for weight loss.

This multidisciplinary unit, formed by prestigious specialists in areas such as nutrition, endocrinology, surgery, psychology, and endoscopy, allows us to treat the patient in a comprehensive manner with the aim of offering a personalised diagnosis adjusted to their physical and psychosocial characteristics, ensuring success. Obesity, also known as the epidemic of the 21st century, affects 17% of the adult population of Spain and leads to associated diseases as serious as diabetes, ischemic heart disease, cardiovascular disease, respiratory insufficiency, or osteoarthritis. There are different types and stages of obesity, for this reason we carry out a detailed study and assessment of each patient to decide which treatment is most suitable.

Endocrinology and nutrition The objective of our endocrinologists and nutritionists is to evaluate the obese patient and educate them about new dietary habits that can help them lose weight and reduce the risk of diseases arising from excess weight. In the cases of patients who have already undergone Bariatric surgery we evaluate nutritional deficiencies derived from this surgery to provide appropriate dietary modifications and advise on important vitamin supplements.

Bariatric surgery Surgical treatment of obesity is used for patients with a BMI greater than 40 kg/m2 or when the index is lower but there are diseases present such as diabetes, high blood pressure or hip or knee osteoarthritis and sleep apnoea syndrome. The techniques usually used are gastric bypass and vertical gastrectomy, both performed via laparoscopic and with a stay of four days, and most importantly, conducted in a hospital environment, safe and equipped with the latest technology. These techniques help to reduce between 70-80% of excess weight in obese patients. One of the most innovative and effective surgeries performed in our unit is called metabolic or diabetes surgery, results of which allow the patients with type 2 diabetes to stop taking medication, as well as to prevent the emergence of any kind of associated disease.

Endoscopic techniques and obesity Endoscopic techniques used in treating obesity are indicated in patients with a BMI between 28 to 48 and in patients with a BMI less than 28 but presenting conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or dyslipidemia, osteopathy, steatohepatitis, patients who have successfully completed previous treatments and that over time have regained lost weight, patients who want a permanent treatment, and in patients who do not want to undergo major surgical procedures. Different techniques exist including intragastric balloons with different characteristics depending on the time they will be in situ. These times vary from 3 months with the Obalon, to 6 months with the more traditional Allergany to 12 months and the adjustable ball Spatz, the latter being adjustable at different stages. The implantation is carried out using sedation and in some cases with anaesthesia.

All our patients are supported by our psychological team who will evaluate the individual circumstances of each patient. They will provide the therapeutic measures and support needed to achieve the success of the treatment from its inception until the patient is discharged.
