February happenings on the Southern Costa Blanca by Keith Nicol

After all the parades and activities of Christmas and the Three Kings have finished, February is much quieter but there are still a few things to do.

If you are looking for something a little different, especially as a gift or for decoration, there is a monthly Craft Market at the Cuevas del Rodeo in Rojales, where local artists put their work on display along with other craft works to browse and enjoy. It takes place on the 1st Sunday of every month January to June and September to December in the morning from 11am to 2pm and in July and August from 7pm to 11pm.

Another fun and unusual event for kids of all ages is the Torrellano Miniature Steam Train. It is run by the friends of the railways association and so is normally only open on Saturdays between 4pm and 8pm with Miniature Train Rides during February and March on the 2nd Sunday from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Every month the Friends of the Railways Association host a miniature train event at the railway museum in Torrellano. Donations of 1.50€ per visit are requested.

As usual, the most proactive municipality is Torrevieja where there are a number of events and exhibitions every week. La Cazuelica y el Vino 2015, is a similar event to the Tapas Route where you can enjoy a 2€ casserole or wine for 1.50€, from 5th to 8th February at 25 Torrevieja Restaurants. Each of the participating restaurants offers their specials from noon to 4:30pm and 7:30pm to 11pm for a casserole and a wine special.

It’s Opera time on February 7th when Puccini’s La Boheme is performed in the Municipal Theatre at 8pm. Tickets are 35€ and 30€.

February is time for Torrevieja Carnival with two parades, on the 8th and 14th February. The daytime parade is on Sunday, 8th February at 4pm and follows a route from María Asunción Square, through Ramón Gallud street and up to Patricio Pérez street. At the end of the parade, prizes will be handed over at the Municipal Theatre. The evening parade is on Saturday, 14th February, starting around 10pm from María Asunción Square, through Ramón Gallud and up to Patricio Pérez.

On February 21st, there is a Brandenburg Concert with music by Bach, Vivalvi and Tchaikovsky performed by the Orquesta Sinfónica de Torrevieja under the direction of José Francisco. The concert starts at 7pm in the Auditorio Internacional.

Also on the 21st at 7pm, the Coro Nuevo Amanecer, perform a free concert at the Palacio de la Música, while at 8pm the VI Festival de la Copla takes place in the Teatro Municipal with tickets at 7€. The same night also has a night of Instrumental Rock happening at 10pm with Cold Fusion at the C. C. Virgen del Carmen, with free entry.

On February 26th, Opera returns again, with Verdi’s “Un Baile De Máscaras” in the Teatro Municipal. Tickets are 30€ and 25€.

On 28th February at 7pm, Coro Bella Torrevieja perform in the Palacio de la

Música, with tickets priced at 3€ and at 10pm a concert will be performed by El Barrio in the Palacio de los Deportes Infanta Cristina. Tickets are priced at 150€ (Platinum), 40€ (Front Stage) and 27€ (General).

For something completely different, on February 11th, 12th and 13th, the Rocky Horror Show is being performed by a local celebrity cast at the Madhouse Studio on the Orihuela Costa. Tickets are almost sold out, but please phone 666 551 816 or email: matrixstudiospain@gmail.com about tickets.
