Parish upset by J8 plan backing
HOLLINGBOURNE Parish Council says it is disappointed to learn of borough ward Cllr Daphne Parvin’s support for de- velopment at junction 8 of the M20. The parish council decided to publish correspondence from Cllr Parvin on its website after writing to ask for her views on proposals to build industrial estates off the A20. In a forwarded email, Cllr Parvin
had sought the formal position from Maidstone Council’s head of planning Rob Jarman, who had supportedWaterside Park. She wrote to him: “We both re-
alise that something will happen on this site, and feel it is better to support a suitable application rather than keep refusing and get-
ting something we would rather not have passed on appeal.” Two rejected applications have
been made for development atWa- terside Park, which is next to the Mer- cure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel on the A20, and ap- peal hearings have been scheduled. Hollingbourne Council,
Cllr Daphne Parvin
Parish
which is against development at junction 8, said Cllr Parvin’s views had “proved a disappointment”. Its chairman Cllr Mike Bedwell, said the Joint Parishes Group had agreed that such schemes should only be considered when all brownfield sites had been ex- hausted.
St John’s tops results list
PUPILS leaving St John’s in Grove Green in 2014 achieved the best results of any local primary school. The school, in ProvenderWay,
had the highest percentage of its 10 and 11-year-olds reaching level four – the Government’s benchmark for average achievement – at the end of Key Stage 2. All but two local schools surpassed the Government’s target minimum of 65% achieving level four. The tests focus on reading, writing and maths. In Kent, 68% achieved level four, compared to 67% nationally. The figures are as follows, with the 2013 figures in brackets: St John’s, Grove Green –97% (88%) Roseacre, Bearsted –92%(82%)

Anger at bike track delays
ALANDSCAPEconservation char- ity has criticised Maidstone Council for failing to remove an unautho- rised motocross circuit near Harri- etsham. The warning from the Campaign
to Protect Rural England comes 15 months after the council failed to force the reinstatement of the green- field land, in Sandway. In September 2013, an appeal
failed to take place after the appli- cant claimed the enforcement notice issued by the council to restore the land at the junction of Sandway Road and Runham Lane would re- quire him to commit an illegal act by impacting on great crested newts. Richard Knox-Johnston,whorep- resented CPRE Protect Kent at the
inquiry and more than 200 neigh- bours who complained about the destruction caused and the noise made by the bikes, said: “The coun- cil attempted to take action over this unauthorised use of the land but was caught out at the appeal by something it should have seen com- ing.A year on, and it has still taken no action. “The council needs to act, other-
wise this gives a green light to any- one thinking of flouting the law.” Heclaimed therewas already talk
of the applicant using the land as a race-track again. A council spokesman said:“We have obtained legal advice on this case, and will be calling a meeting with interested parties to explain our next actions.”
