Appeal over homes refusal

A DEVELOPER has appealed against the refusal of an outline planning application for 89 homes in Gleaming Wood Drive,Walder- slade. Palm Developments has lodged

an appeal with the Planning In- spectorate after Maidstone Council refused the application for the homes with a biomass heating plant on a greenfield site. Before Maidstone Council con- sidered the application, the parish council objected to it for a number of reasons. It pointed out that the access road would be driven through a woodland belt that had hitherto been protected from de- velopment. This belt is part of the rural strategic gap between the Medway Towns and Maidstone and also the buffer zone between the Walderslade/Lordswood resi- dential areas and the urbanised Hempstead Valley. The parish council’s views, and

those of the many residents who wrote requesting refusal, will be forwarded to the inspector in sup- port of the case. The inspector’s de- cision is expected soon.

Ice alert for

the new year THE parish council wishes all resi- dents a very happy 2015 but, with heavy snow still possible this winter, would like to remind them of the proper use of grit bins: • Roadside grit bins are placed where a gradient or other safety issues in icy conditions may en- danger the public. • The contents are for use solely on the roadway, pavements or public footpaths. They should not be used on private drives or gar- den paths. Residents should buy their own supplies from DIY stores or builders’ merchants. • Scatter it on the road or path only where you know that traffic will ramit into the snow or ice as this is what causes it to melt. • A four-pint plastic milk bottle with the bottom cut off and the lid firmly screwed on makes a scoop that can be left in the bin. • KCC should refill all the grit bins when necessary. If one is missed, call 03000 418181.

32 Maidstone East January 2015 Barrier to deter HGVs

A BARRIER is to be installed in part of Old Chatham Road, San- dling, in a bid to prevent overnight HGV parking south of the official layby. Cllr Wendy Hinder, who has

been campaigning to stop anti- social behaviour by lorry drivers, reported to the parish council that KCChad agreed to erect the barrier for an initial six-month period. If successful, it would be made per- manent.

Separately, in a letter to the

parish council, ward county coun- cillor Paul Carter said: “It became evident [in discussions] that Kent Police was unlikely to be able to provide sufficient resources to ad- equately enforce the clearway al- ready created, and I have now asked for a physical barrier to be in- stalled to cause a narrowing of the carriageway that will effectively prohibit parking.” Cllr Hinder said this was very

good news as she was continuing to receive complaints from resi-

dents about the noise from lorries’ refrigeration equipment and driv- ers washing and going to the toilet in full view of nearby homes. She added: “It amazes me that

dog owners can be fined for allow- ing their dogs to foul the footpath butwe deem it okay for humans to do it – and in full view of local houses.” The parish council has agreed to part-fund additional signage indi- cating that this type of anti-social behaviour is not acceptable.

BOXLEY Parish Council has nominated Cllr Bob Hinder for a com- munity award in recognition of his commitment to the successful establishment of the Dove Hill allotments, with all the physical work, organisational skills and drive he invested in the project. Councillors considered three nominations before reaching their decision. Chairman Ivor Davies said all the candidateswere worthy but unfortunately only one could go forward.

Water concern Studio parking

THE parish council has expressed concerns about a plan to replace a bungalow in Chatham Road, San- dling with two new bungalows. Members wished to see the plan-

ning application refused and re- ported to Maidstone Council’s planning committee for a number of reasons including that, as resi- dential development outside the urban area, it was contrary to the local plan. It was understood that large

parts of the gardens can become waterlogged with thewater gradu- ally draining into a stream at the back. Run-off from the hard stand- ing of the development and the loss of garden land that absorbs water would, it was believed, adversely affect neighbouring properties and the countryside.

USE of the park-and-ride car park to keep audience cars away from Grove Green TV studios is thought to have been fairly successful. A few glitches were experienced

but the number of complaints re- ceived is down. It is recognised that without enforcement it will be dif- ficult to stop the parking. The parish council will continue to monitor the situation and try to get the permanent PCSO in the area when filming takes place.

based system whereby residents who supply contact details will be informed of issues in their area that might affect them. Examples of matters that will be notified are planning applications; specifically local trading standards or police alerts; community consultations or meetings planned by the parish council; and Maidstone Council local plan issues. The parish council has a presence

on Facebook but recognises that not every resident wants to be in- volved with Facebook so is offering this alternative. The pilot scheme will run for six months, after which it will be reviewed. To receive alerts, please contact

the parish office at enquiry@box- leyparishcouncil.org.uk giving your email address and stating which of the following four areas you wish to receive alerts for: Grove Green and Weavering; Box- ley village; Sandling and Forstal; or Lordswood andWalderslade.

Parked vehicles

PCSO Trevor Knowler reported that a number of vehicles belonging to a hire company had been parked on the Lidsing Road bridge span- ning the M2. The firm had been asked to remove these as they ob- structed the view of traffic travel- ling northwards.
