Objections to plans for homes close to village
TWO proposed housing develop- ments off Old Ashford Road, Lenham could create 28 homes. A planning application by South-
ern Heritage Developments says 23 homes could be built at The Pad- dock, Grove House, comprising five four-bedroom houses, 10 of three bedrooms, four of two bedrooms and four one-bedroom flats. A proposal by another applicant requests five homes at Tanyard Farm.
According to Southern Heritage
Developments, 11 of 15 responses to a consultation exhibition were in favour of the 23-home scheme in
principle, with three very opposed and one undecided. The objectors cited concerns about
high density and dangerous access on to the A20 Ashford Road; noise and pressure on the nearby medical centre; encroachment on the coun- tryside, traffic increases and pollu- tion. Lenham Parish Council claimed the scheme would increase pressure on parking. The five-home Tanyard Farm scheme involves converting three barns, the erection of three homes and the demolition of sheds. Lenham Parish Council objected, as did resident Merrilyn Boarman,
KIMS wins hospital design prize
THE £95m Kent Institute ofMedicine & Surgery (KIMS) in Maidstone has taken the top prize at the national 2014 Building Better Healthcare Awards. The award for best acute hospital development was presented to London-based David Morley Architects, who designed KIMS Hospital, which is said to mirror the design flair of a boutique hotel, promoting health and wellbeing through the use of natural materials, maximum daylight and attractive landscaping. Therapy gardens, green roofs and innovative green walls encourage biodiversity and enhance patient views.
who wrote to Maidstone Council: “This area has become a wildlife haven. I have observed kingfishers, wagtails, heron and sparrowhawks, as well as mallard, moorhens and other birds; and great crested newts, hedgehogs and grass snakes. “The water level makes this area
boggy after rainfall and quite un- suited to development. I beg you to turn down this application.” Asupporting statement said: “The scheme seeks a use for the barns that will fund their restoration and en- sure their upkeep.” The council will decide both ap- plications.
