The set of five palm trees by Patrick Mavros (opposite) show the level of detail and quality he is renowned for. Mavros has a large following and we have had a number of successes with pieces by him; most notably in our 22nd July 2014 silver sale, a pair of candlesticks in the form of trees mounted with elephants and antelopes, which sold for £3,170.
Miniaturised items were primarily a Victorian fascination, and the late 19th century 14ct gold cased dictionary (image 2) to be sold in January is a good example where this was also combined with a certain practicality. The dictionaries were often one of the many household items suspended from a chatelaine - a chain usually worn around the waist of ladies. Other items to be found on the chain included scissors, thimbles, keys, a watch and tweezers.
Collections are often created with a view to buying good examples of their type. This is particularly well highlighted in the private collection of spoons (image 3) and marrow scoops. Collected over many years, it includes Irish, Scottish, provincial and Channel Islands examples. This is also illustrated in the private collection of over 100 lots of various gold coins, included in the sale.
