Clients frequently remark that our work must be exciting as ‘you never know what is going to turn up next’ and this is certainly true of the oil by William Gowe Ferguson (opposite & 1), a Scottish born painter who lived in Holland from 1660 and also travelled in France and Italy during his career. Gowe specialised in meticulous hunting still lifes of dead game with beautifully observed plumage and the accoutrements of hunting to embellish the scene. However he also painted a small number of Italianate scenes of ruins, of which this work is a very good example.

It comes with an important provenance, having previously been in the collection of the Marquess of Tweeddale at Yester House in East Lothian, Scotland.

Frederick Tudgay was the most prolific of the Tudgay family of painters, who were based in London. The National Maritime Museum has several examples of their work. They were not known to have exhibited their pictures, a reflection of their popularity with ship owners at the time. This accurate depiction of the trading ship City of Amoy is typical of his oeuvre (image 3). The City of Amoy was

built on the Clyde in 1863 by Barclay Curle and Co. and was operated by George Smith and Co. of the City Line of steam and sailing ships. She was wrecked off the Falkland Islands in 1872, so this is, perhaps, a commemorative portrait.

The sale also includes the portrait of Catherine the Great of Russia shown here (image 2) and an interesting group of etchings by Herbert Dicksee and a collection of pictures by Edward Wilkins Waite and other members of the Waite family.
