ASIAN ART 20th & 21st May 2015
SHIBAYAMA KODANSU The Shibayama family started producing this type of ware inlaid with pieces of ivory, mother of pearl, horn and many other materials in the late 18th century. This type of decoration creates a three-dimensional effect on the background (typically made
of ivory or lacquer) that Western collectors in the 19th century were particularly fond of. The Shibayama family created a great variety of pieces (vases, tsuba, inro, and small table cabinets such as this one) and this cabinet is an exquisite example of their work.
A fine Japanese Shibayama silver and lacquer Kodansu (table cabinet), Meiji 1868-1912, 22.3cm x 17.7cm x 23.7cm. Estimate: £4,000 - 6,000.
