PAINTINGS PART I – FINE OLD MASTERS & 19TH CENTURY PART II – 20TH CENTURY & CONTEMPORARY ART
The Fine Old Masters sale on the morning of 10th December had an interesting selection of portraits. The portrait of Robert Banks Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, KG, MP (1770-1828) and longest serving Prime Minister since 1806, by Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A. (1769-1830) led the day, selling for £48,800. However an intriguing early portrait of a lady, thought to be Mary Queen of Scots sold for £30,500 from an estimate of £5,000 - £7,000, a price which underlines a renewed interest in portraits especially from the 16th to 18th Centuries.
There was also considerable interest in a pair of paintings by Dominic Serres R.A. (1722-1793). One of the pair depicted HMS Lowestoffe in Jamaica and was believed to include the earliest depiction of any ship of Lord Nelson’s command, the Little Lucy. The Lowestoffe was commanded by Captain William Locker who befriended Nelson and appointed him Captain of the Little Lucy. Locker was also a friend of the artist Serres and the paintings had been passed down from Captain Locker’s family to the vendors. The quality of the paintings, the popularity of the subject and the impressive provenance saw the pair sell for £29,300.
On the same day we held our third 20th Century and Contemporary pictures sale. The varied selection included pieces by many well known modern British painters and printmakers. One highlight, and top price, was £23,200 for a large Welsh landscape by Sir Kyffin Williams R.A. There were also strong results for works by Mark Senior (£20,130), Augustus John (£19,520) as well as £11,590 for an unusual small Moorland landscape by Sir Alfred Munnings.
