The fine William and Mary marquetry escritoire featured on the facing page is part of a small collection of late 17th / early 18th century furniture from a private collection in West Sussex. The escritoire dates from c.1690 and follows the French fashion for floral marquetry that was brought to the French court of Louis XIV by the Dutch immigrant ébéniste Pierre Gole. The collection also features a Queen Anne solid yew gateleg table (£3,000-5,000) of very good colour and a pair of George II walnut stools (£2,500-3,500).
The Napoleon III ormolu wall light (image 1) is one of a set of four by Victor Paillard. Victor Paillard (1805-1886) is best known as a bronze fondeur, working for such well known 19th century sculptors as Pradier, Carrier-Belleuse and Barye. He also produced candelabra, wall appliques and decorative objects. His business was started in 1830 and by 1855 had flourished to such an extent that he employed over one hundred workmen.

We are delighted to be selling a small collection of textiles collected by Field Marshall Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850- 1916). The highlight is this Ottoman silk mosque portière (image 2), which hails from Egypt or Syria. This finely embroidered door surround decorated with panels of foliage and calligraphy was almost certainly acquired by Lord Kitchener during his time spent in North Africa. In 1883 he was promoted to
Captain and was dispatched to Egypt where he was given the Turkish rank of Bimbashi (Major). His role for the most part was to aid the reconstruction of the Egyptian army. By 1892 he had become Sirda (Commander-in- chief) of this army and won national acclaim for winning the Battles of Ferkeh and Hafir in 1896.
