for the mission.” Chief Lutz felt his assignment to Special Operations was “Unquestion- ably the epitome of my service career. My volunteerism in the Air Commando Association (ACA) is a fulfilling extension of those most exciting days of yore.”
CMSgt Hap Lutz’ service
took him from his first tour in China during 1948 to over six tours in Laos, and several
more in Southeast Asia in- cluding South Vietnam and Thailand. He volunteered for PROJECT JUNGLE JIM in 1962 reporting for duty at Bien
Hoa AB in South Vietnam. Hap also served in PROJECT WATER PUMP at Udorn AB, in Thailand, during many of those TDYs he participated in missions in the neighboring country of Laos working with Air America. During this time, Hap also worked with World Medical Relief, Inc. providing medical care to local villagers and people of the host country while still performing his duty as an Air Commando Medic. CMSgt Lutz is considered a pioneer of Air Commando Medicine. There is an AFSOC level award named in his hon- or, the CMSgt Roland ‘Hap’ Lutz Air Commando Medic of the Year, it is awarded to an ac- tive duty special operator dur- ing the annual Air Commando Association Convention. CMSgt Hap Lutz was inducted into the Air Com- mando Hall of Fame in 1969. He was one of the founding members of the Air Comman- do Association, working with BGen Harry ‘Heinie’ Ader- holt and Dee Roberson and many others during the early 1970s to form an association that fostered the comradery of
